Early Saturday morning, reports emerged of significant explosions shaking the Iranian capital, amid statements from Israel that it had carried out a preemptive military action.
Powerful Explosions and Plumes of Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were audible in the city on Saturday. Simultaneously, two plumes of dense smoke were observed rising over the centre and east of the city.
“The type of these blasts indicates that this is a strike involving missiles,” a media outlet stated, though it did not immediately provide additional information.
Context: Rising Tensions and Prior Developments
The incident occurs against a backdrop of sharply increased tensions in the Middle East. Major events leading up to this attack include:
- American Naval Deployment: A massive buildup of American warships in the Middle East, including the movement of carrier strike groups.
- Nuclear Talks: Latest talks between the US and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with indications of more discussions scheduled.
- Official Rhetoric: Prior to the attack, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and delivered warnings regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to settle the atomic standoff or confront serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
Reacting to prior accusations, Iranian officials had accused the United States of spreading “big lies” about its defensive capabilities. Officials rejected assertions about weapons development and protest deaths as baseless.
The situation remains fluid, with additional reports expected as the situation develops.
