British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of access tunnels leading to the site... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as Daesh - imposed militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among a great many British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove militants who endanger our safety, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in the country, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
