Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Major Alliance Formed Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the New Political Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Political Discussions Underway

In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of leading political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
