No fewer than 13 people killed and 98 hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's major government projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” stated the country's president.

The president announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term ended the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his government's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The building of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its duties in civilian projects. They were completed at an rapid rate, surpassing forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had also raised ongoing apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party demanded an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This pause was suggested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."

In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic projects.
