Fresh analysis reveals that patients who stop using new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users using these medications must be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the accelerated rebound.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
People who have discontinued the medication report a sudden return of appetite.
"It was like a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Use
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among females than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
