Right-leaning responses to the limited disclosure of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain supporters of the previous administration pointing out the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in images, while others lamented how heavy censorship cast former President Trump and Republicans in a negative manner.
Administration Justifies Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Administration officials justified the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a President or the Justice Department been this transparent with the American people about such a delicate legal matter,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo describing the redaction process.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While the former president's name and likeness appear in some of the documents, the extensive black blocks raise serious questions about the information may be hidden beneath them. A number of Republicans immediately called for greater transparency.
“People are raging and walking away,” posted Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the censorship violate the statute, and implied that a subsequent legislature may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this document release egregiously does not adhere to both the intent and the wording of the act,” he continued.
A Faction of Conservative Commentators Swing In Support of the Release
However, a segment of rightwing commentators and former President loyalists swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a DOJ run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are entirely redacted, and numerous of the men depicted in pictures have their identities blacked out.
Yet some are not, including high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, allowed certain rightwing voices to launch the attack.
“This is pretty ironic how the political left falsely claimed Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one explanation Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Clinton Campaign Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently stated he knew of zero criminal actions by Epstein and has not been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been concealing those files for months only to dump them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from information they’ll try and conceal permanently. So they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the response added.
Overall Conservative Commentary Seems Muted
However, broader comment on the right was comparatively muted following the release, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous demands for action that preceded the congressional vote to pass a law requiring the documents' publication.
Loomer, who recently accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been among the loudest advocates for a full disclosure. In February, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative influencers were given hard-copy binders of files that included no previously unseen data.
