The Top Record of the Year: The Artist's Masterpiece Takes the Top Spot.

Initially, Lux may look closer to a difficult scholarly challenge than the latest pop album by an artist whose last hit was a collaboration with an international pop star. Divided across four distinct movements and performed in 13 languages, this is a dizzying orchestral-influenced work exploring feminine mystery, religious ascent, and bodily change, often by way of the perspective of different saintly figures. The dissolution of a romance—a theme handled with grounded openness on another major 2025 album—is launched heavenward here, carried by the lush sound of a major orchestra and work from an award-winning songwriter among a vast roll call of contributors. Its sheer daring by itself renders the efforts of contemporary artists look rather laughable.

Rising Above Scholarly Pretense

That this album manages to escape overly intellectual chin-stroking is almost miraculous, with sole praise belonging to Rosalía. Although this is not her first album to fuse historical sounds with modern styles, its ambitions feel much greater on Lux, and the balancing act more precarious. The element that truly elevates her fourth release, beyond its complex tunes, rich compositions, and inherent drama, is a core sense of playfulness. Much like the iconic Björk at her peak, you find a captivating sense to the vocalist's voice which sweeps you into its whirlwind. When she's tearing hearts in two, you nevertheless want to be alongside her for the ride.

A Prime Moment of Joy

This exuberant spirit comes forth clearly during the stirring piano-led song about Saint Clare. It bathes in a sorrowful melancholy over several moments. Suddenly, all the music falls away, to reveal we hear a gleeful giggle and a declaration before a comically over-the-top orchestral crescendo crashes in with comedic impact. The song then shifts to the frenetic track driven by galloping strings, an imposing choral group, and a surprise appearance from the artist herself.

"The charm with this album is that you never exactly know—nor want to predict—what you will go next."

Nearly each track concludes in a completely different place from how it started. A track examines the fleeting trappings of fame over a delicate symphony only to disintegrating into electronic cacophony. Another, a song echoing her earlier trap-infused style begins out dark and sinister, with menacing beats, before sudden flamenco handclaps and a heavenly chorus arrive to soften its jagged corners.

The Bridge Of Art & Accessibility

A key achievement on the album involves straddling the gap of radical innovation and mainstream accessibility. It is little coincidence that the album has become the artist's highest-charting release to crack the upper reaches of key charts: at its core a suite of truly catchy hits. One track sung primarily in English builds around a chorus that seems to collect more and more nagging melodies as it spins upward. This feat is repeated by another powerful track that expands and constricts, intertwining multiple melodies like a complex weave.

  • A waltz-like number seduces via its jaunty, Disney-adjacent drama and an anthemic chorus.
  • Lyrically, it aligns with pop culture impact of contemporary heartbreak songs, lambasting an ex- lover labeled an "psychological bully".
  • Throughout these tracks, the singing carry a painted-on smile, akin to a storybook character hiding a knife: "Top prize in acting like a scoundrel / You've the podium of letdown."

An Opulent Feast for the Soul

This album is pop on a maximalist level, a hungry reach for high artistry in an era of looming artificial sameness. It eschews self-absorption for sublime transcendence, crafting an over-the-top spectacle that skillfully controls its own built-in ridiculousness. It is an abundant well of buried gems that takes patience to fully explore but doesn't feels like a chore. While some big pop albums of 2025 felt like feasting on scraps, this record is a lavish banquet at which the characters at it, some intoxicated on sacred drink, flutter from discussions about historical figures, the profound sensation of heartbreaking grief, and shared gossip about useless men. It is a contemporary theatrical production from pop's truly restlessly creative practitioner.
