Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
