The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.
Video review technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Athletes are granted the ability to challenge particular decisions made by the official, echoing the system currently in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This move arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review other decisions, such as:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Possible hindrance end of a rally.
Notably, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a player can ask for.
A Recent Example
An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at all of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
